Cabbage And Ground Beef Skillet

This Cabbage and Ground Beef Skillet is a cozy, low-carb, one-pan wonder. It brings together tender caramelized cabbage, savory seasoned ground beef, garlic, and onions, all simmered together into a wholesome, comforting meal that comes together in under 30 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 1 medium head of green cabbage, cored and roughly chopped (about 6 to 8 cups)
  • 1 lb lean ground beef (or ground turkey)
  • 1 large yellow onion, diced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (or avocado oil)
  • ½ teaspoon paprika (smoked or sweet)
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano or Italian seasoning
  • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for a gentle kick)
  • Salt and freshly cracked black pepper, to taste
  • ¼ cup beef broth, tomato sauce, or water (to help steam the cabbage)
  • Fresh parsley or green onions, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

1.Brown the Beef:Brown the ground beef in a large skillet over medium-high heat, then remove and set aside.

Heat a large, deep skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, until thoroughly browned and cooked through (about 6 to 7 minutes). Use a slotted spoon to transfer the beef to a plate, leaving the flavorful rendered fat in the pan.
2.Sauté Aromatics:Sauté diced onions and minced garlic in the remaining pan juices until soft and fragrant.

Add the olive oil to the skillet if the pan looks dry. Toss in the diced onions and sauté for 3 to 4 minutes until translucent. Add the minced garlic, paprika, oregano, salt, and pepper, stirring constantly for about 1 minute until fragrant.
3.Add Cabbage:Add chopped cabbage and broth, stirring well as the cabbage begins to wilt.

Add the chopped cabbage to the skillet in batches if necessary, stirring to coat it in the onion and garlic mixture. Pour in the ¼ cup of beef broth or water.
4.Simmer and Steam:Cover and simmer over medium-low heat for 10 to 12 minutes until cabbage is tender.

Cover the skillet with a lid and let everything simmer over medium-low heat for 10 to 12 minutes, stirring occasionally. The cabbage will shrink down significantly and become tender-crisp and sweet.
5.Combine and Finish:Return the cooked ground beef to the skillet, toss together, and heat through.

Return the browned ground beef (along with any juices) back into the skillet with the tender cabbage. Stir thoroughly to combine all the flavors and let it heat through for 2 to 3 minutes. Taste and adjust seasoning with extra salt and pepper if needed. Garnish with fresh parsley before serving!
