Sweet Potato Pie

Sweet Potato Pie is a Southern classic that outshines pumpkin pie with its naturally rich sweetness, velvety smooth custard texture, and aromatic warmth. Unlike pumpkin—which can sometimes taste watery—sweet potatoes provide a dense, nutrient-packed base loaded with beta-carotene, fiber, and vitamins.

When baked with browned butter, warm spices, and a flaky crust, it delivers an unforgettable melt-in-your-mouth experience.

Ingredients

The Filling:

  • 2 lbs whole sweet potatoes (about 3 medium-large yams/sweet potatoes)
  • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted (browned butter adds incredible depth!)
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar (or a mix of brown and white sugar for molasses notes)
  • ½ cup evaporated milk or heavy cream
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp ground nutmeg
  • ¼ tsp ground ginger
  • ¼ tsp salt

The Crust & Topping:

  • 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust (homemade all-butter crust or a high-quality store-bought pastry)
  • Optional: A dollop of freshly whipped cream or a dusting of cinnamon for serving.

Instructions

1.Roast the Sweet Potatoes:Pierce whole sweet potatoes with a fork and roast at 400°F (200°C) for 45 to 60 minutes until completely tender.

Roasting concentrates the natural sugars and starches far better than boiling. Once tender, let them cool slightly, peel away the skins, and transfer the flesh to a large mixing bowl.
2.Mash and Smooth:Mash or blend the warm sweet potatoes with melted butter until completely smooth and free of stringy fibers.

Using a hand mixer, food processor, or potato masher, blend the roasted sweet potato flesh with the melted butter until it is ultra-silky and smooth.
3.Mix the Custard:Whisk in sugar, milk, eggs, vanilla, spices, and salt until a rich custard forms.

Add the sugar, evaporated milk (or cream), eggs, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and salt to the sweet potato puree. Beat on medium speed until thoroughly combined into a uniform, pourable custard.
4.Bake to Perfection:Pour the filling into your prepared pie crust and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 50 to 60 minutes until set.

Pour the filling into your unbaked 9-inch pie crust, smoothing the top. Bake at 350°F for 50 to 60 minutes. The edges should be set, and the center should only have a slight, gentle jiggle.
5.Cool and Chill:Cool completely on a wire rack before slicing, allowing the custard to firm up fully.

Let the pie cool completely at room temperature for at least 2 hours, then chill in the refrigerator for an hour before slicing. Serve with fresh whipped cream!
