Ingredients
The Pastry & Filling:
-
1 box (2 sheets) frozen puff pastry, thawed according to package instructions
-
½ lb (8 oz) ground beef (lean)
-
¼ cup yellow onion, finely diced
-
2 cloves garlic, minced
-
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
-
½ tsp Italian seasoning (or dried oregano)
-
Salt and freshly cracked black pepper to taste
-
1 cup freshly shredded sharp cheddar or Gruyère cheese (divided)
The Egg Wash & Finish:
-
1 large egg beaten with 1 tbsp water (for brushing)
-
1 tbsp sesame seeds, everything bagel seasoning, or grated Parmesan cheese (for sprinkling)
Instructions
1.Prep and Preheat:Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line two large baking sheets with parchment paper.
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.
2.Cook the Beef Filling:Cook ground beef and onion until browned, drain excess grease, and mix in garlic, Worcestershire sauce, and seasonings.
In a skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef and diced onion until the meat is fully browned and the onions are soft (about 6 to 8 minutes). Drain any excess grease. Stir in the minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper, cooking for 1 more minute until fragrant. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
3.Roll Out the Pastry:Roll out the first sheet of thawed puff pastry on a lightly floured surface into an even rectangle.
Unfold your first sheet of thawed puff pastry onto a lightly floured work surface. Roll it out gently with a rolling pin just to smooth out the creases.
4.Assemble the Layers:Layer half the cooked beef and half the cheese over the pastry sheet, then top with the second pastry sheet.
Spread the cooked beef mixture evenly over the first sheet of puff pastry, leaving a tiny border around the edges. Sprinkle half of the shredded cheese over the beef. Unfold the second sheet of puff pastry and place it directly on top of the filling to create a sandwich.
5.Cut and Twist:Cut the filled pastry into 10-12 even strips, twist each strip tightly, and place on the baking sheets.
Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, slice the pastry sandwich crosswise into 10 to 12 equal strips. Take each strip by both ends, gently twist it 3 to 4 times like a corkscrew, and place it on the prepared baking sheets, pressing the ends down slightly so they hold their shape.
6.Bake and Serve:Brush with egg wash, sprinkle with seasoning or cheese, and bake at 400°F for 18 to 22 minutes until golden and flaky.
Brush the top of each twist generously with the beaten egg wash. Sprinkle with everything bagel seasoning, sesame seeds, or the remaining cheese. Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 18 to 22 minutes, or until the puff pastry is puffed, deeply golden brown, and flaky. Let cool for 5 minutes before serving!
